EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving depicts the prickly pear, scientifically known as Nopalea cochenillifera, or Opuntia cochenillifera. The illustration was created in 1837 as part of Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, or Dictionary of Natural Sciences, published in Florence, Italy. The meticulous engraving was executed by Corsi, with direction from the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin (1775-1840). The prickly pear, also known as the cactus cochenillifer, catto della cocciniglia, or piptochaetium panicoides, is a succulent plant native to the Americas. Its edible fruits, which resemble pears, are rich in nutrients and have been used for food and medicine for centuries. The plant's distinctive features include its flat, paddle-shaped pads covered in spines, and its bright yellow, red, or purple fruits. The botanical illustration captures the prickly pear's intricate details, from the tiny hairs on its spines to the veins on its leaves. The use of the stipple engraving technique adds depth and texture to the image, making it a beautiful and accurate representation of this fascinating plant. Turpin's expertise as a botanical illustrator is evident in the precise rendering of the prickly pear's form and structure, making this a valuable addition to any botanical collection.
