EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcoloured copperplate engraving, created by Sasso from Giulio Ferrario's "Ancient and Modern Costumes of all the Peoples of the World," published in Florence, Italy in 1844, showcases a vibrant array of plants native to the Indonesian island of Sumatra. The illustration highlights four distinct plant species: clove (1), mangosteen (3), rambutan (4), and black pepper (5). Clove trees (1) are depicted with their distinctive long, narrow leaves and large, red-brown buds, which are the source of the prized spice. Clove was one of the earliest imported spices into Europe and was highly valued for its aromatic and medicinal properties. Mangosteen trees (3) are illustrated with their large, glossy leaves and ripe, purple-red fruits. The sweet, juicy aril-covered seeds are a popular delicacy in Southeast Asia and are believed to have numerous health benefits. Rambutan trees (4) are shown with their spiky, red fruits, which are encased in a thick, leathery rind. The edible, white, juicy arils are a popular snack and are rich in vitamin C. Black pepper (5) plants are depicted with their climbing vines and small, white flowers, which eventually develop into the familiar black peppercorns. Sumatra is known for producing high-quality pepper, which is prized for its strong, pungent flavor. This beautiful illustration not only showcases the natural beauty of Sumatra's flora but also provides a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of the region during the 19th century.
