EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored engraving by Thomas Landseer, based on an illustration by Charles Hamilton Smith, depicts the Oribi antelope, scientifically known as Ourebia ourebi quadriscopa. The Oribi, also referred to as the Four-tufted Antelope or Quadriscopa Antelope, is a small antelope species native to eastern and southern Africa. This elegant ruminant is characterized by its distinctive four tufts of hair on its hindquarters, which are most prominent in the females. The Oribi is a grazing antelope, primarily feeding on grasses and herbs. They are social animals that live in herds, which are led by a dominant male. They are agile and nimble, able to navigate through dense vegetation with ease. Their coat is reddish-brown in color, with white underparts and a white stripe that runs down the length of their body. This engraving is taken from Edward Griffiths' The Animal Kingdom by the Baron Cuvier, published in London by Whittaker in 1827. The work was a significant contribution to natural history and zoology, featuring accurate and detailed illustrations of various animal species. The Oribi antelope was a popular subject in natural history studies during this period, and this engraving provides a fascinating glimpse into the scientific exploration of African wildlife during the early 19th century.
