This exquisite hand-colored engraving depicts the Northern Red Munjtak, scientifically known as Muntiacus vaginalis, also referred to as the Nepal Muntjak or the Cervus moschatus subspecies. The image is based on an illustration by the renowned British natural history artist, Charles Hamilton Smith, and was created by Thomas Landseer in 1827 as part of Edward Griffiths' publication, "The Animal Kingdom" by the Baron Cuvier. The Northern Red Munjtak is a small, agile deer species native to the mountainous regions of Central and Eastern Asia. They are characterized by their distinctive reddish-brown coat, which helps them blend seamlessly into their forested habitats. These deer are herbivores, feeding mainly on grasses, leaves, and shoots. They are also known to browse on fruits and berries during certain seasons. The Northern Red Munjtak is a solitary animal, with males and females living separately except during mating season.
