EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured copperplate engraving, created by the renowned Italian artist Antonio Sasso for Giulio Ferrari's "Ancient and Modern Costumes of all the Peoples of the World," showcases the distinctive traditional attire of three tribes of the Galla people from southern Abyssinia, now known as Ethiopia. The three tribes depicted are the Bertu (Barentu Oromo), Boren (Borana Oromo), and Lobo. The Bertu tribe, represented on the left, are shown wearing long, flowing robes with intricate patterns and fringes. The men are adorned with bead necklaces and bracelets, while the women wear elaborate headdresses and earrings. Their skin is painted with various designs, signifying their tribal affiliation. To the right, the Boren tribe members are depicted in more muted colours, with the men wearing short, pleated skirts and the women wearing long, draped garments. The Boren people are also known for their distinctive hairstyles, with the women wearing their hair in long, braided extensions. In the center, the Lobo tribe members are shown wearing simple, loose-fitting garments made of animal hides. The men are adorned with beaded necklaces and bracelets, while the women wear beaded anklets and earrings. The Lobo people are known for their distinctive facial scarifications, which were believed to signify their bravery and status within their tribe. This beautiful and intricately detailed illustration provides a fascinating glimpse into the traditional dress and customs of these three Galla tribes from southern Abyssinia, offering a window into their rich cultural heritage.
