EDITORS COMMENTS
This lithograph, created by Karl Joseph Brodtmann for Heinrich Rudolf Schinz's Illustrated Natural History of Men and Animals in 1836, offers a glimpse into the rich cultural diversity of Native American communities in Florida and South America during the early 19th century. The central figure is Mico Chlucco, the revered Long Warrior and King of the Seminole nation in Florida. He is depicted in regal attire, adorned with a magnificent feather headdress and a coat made from the pelts of local animals. Beneath the King, two Native American figures from South America are depicted. The first is a Miranha woman, identified as a member of the Bora tribe, who is shown in her natural state, without clothing. Her body is adorned with intricate tattoos, symbolizing her tribal affiliation and personal achievements. The second figure is a Yuri man, also known as Juri, who is identified by his distinctive tattooed mouth. Both figures represent the diverse and complex cultures that existed in South America during this period. The intricate details in this lithograph provide a window into the rich cultural heritage of these Native American communities, showcasing their unique traditions, attire, and body art. The image serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving and celebrating the diverse histories and cultures of indigenous peoples around the world.
