EDITORS COMMENTS
This hauntingly beautiful brass rubbing depicts Isabel Bernardston, the wife of Roger Bernardston, who lived in Great Coates, Lincolnshire around the early 15th century. The intricately detailed image captures the essence of a woman in mourning, her hands pressed against the cold, polished brass surface of the memorial plaque. The brass rubbing is believed to have been created around 1420, making it an invaluable historical artifact. Isabel's memorial plaque, which is now preserved in the collection of the Lincolnshire County Museum, was once part of a larger monument that stood in the churchyard of the parish church in Great Coates. Brass memorials were a popular form of commemoration during the Middle Ages, particularly among the wealthy and noble classes. The brass would be inscribed with the deceased person's name, title, and other important details, and the surface would be covered with intricate designs and symbols. Isabel's brass rubbing shows her wearing a flowing gown and a veil, her hands folded in prayer, and her face expressionless but for a hint of sadness in her eyes. The inscription at the bottom of the rubbing reads, "Orate Pro Anima Isabelle Uxoris Rogeri Bernandeston," which translates to "Pray for the soul of Isabel, wife of Roger Bernardston." The art of brass rubbing, which involves pressing paper or fabric against the raised design on a brass memorial to create a reverse image, gained popularity during the 16th and 17th centuries. Today, brass rubbings like this one are cherished for their historical and artistic significance, and they offer a unique window into the past, allowing us to connect with the people and traditions of centuries gone by.
