EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative black-and-white photograph, Miss Olga Madgwick Stanier, the first woman to be appointed as Chief Mechanical Engineer of a major British railway company, proudly unveils the portrait of her esteemed predecessor, Sir William Stanier, at a meeting of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) on October 6, 1966. The portrait, which now hangs in the hallowed halls of the institution, captures the distinguished likeness of Sir William Stanier, who was a leading figure in the development of steam locomotives in Britain during the mid-20th century. Miss Stanier's groundbreaking appointment as CME of the London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS) in 1946 marked a significant milestone in the history of engineering, breaking the glass ceiling for women in a male-dominated industry. Her tenure at the LMS saw the introduction of innovative designs, including the iconic Coronation Class locomotive, which set new standards for power and efficiency. The unveiling ceremony was attended by a distinguished gathering of engineering luminaries, including Lord Christopher Hinton, who is seen watching from the bottom right of the photograph, with his back to the camera. The occasion was a fitting tribute to the legacy of Sir William Stanier, and a testament to the progress made by his successor, Miss Stanier, in the field of mechanical engineering. This photograph, taken from the Mary Evans Picture Library, offers a glimpse into a bygone era of engineering innovation and gender pioneering, and serves as a reminder of the important role that the Institution of Mechanical Engineers has played in shaping the engineering landscape in Britain and beyond.
