EDITORS COMMENTS
Millicent Garrett Fawcett (1847-1929), a pioneering suffragist and early feminist, is depicted in this powerful portrait from 1913. Fawcett's unwavering commitment to women's rights and the fight for suffrage made her a pivotal figure in British history. Co-founder of Newnham College, Cambridge, in 1871, she opened the door for women to receive higher education, paving the way for their future involvement in politics. As the president of the moderate National Union of Women's Suffrage Societies (NUWSS), Fawcett advocated for women's suffrage through peaceful means, such as demonstrations, petitions, and lobbying. Her approach contrasted with the militant tactics of the Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU), led by Emmeline Pankhurst. Fawcett's strategy, however, proved successful, as the Representation of the People Act was passed in 1918, granting women the right to vote in parliamentary elections if they were over 30 and met certain property qualifications. Millicent Fawcett's influence extended beyond suffrage, as she was a prominent voice in the feminist movement, advocating for women's rights in various aspects of society, including employment, education, and marriage. Her determination and dedication to equality left an indelible mark on British history, inspiring generations of women to continue the fight for gender equality.
