EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured lithograph, taken from Carl Hoffmann's "Book of the World" published in Stuttgart in 1849, showcases a fascinating assembly of four distinct and intriguing mammalian species: a Meerkat (Suricata suricatta), an Indian Grey Mongoose (Herpestes edwardsii), a Common Kusimanse (Crossarchus obscurus), and an Asian Palm Civet (Paradoxurus hermaphroditus). The Meerkat, depicted in the foreground, is a social and diurnal mammal native to the arid regions of Southern Africa. Known for their distinctive upright posture and long, slender snouts, Meerkats are skilled burrowers and are well-adapted to their desert environment. Next to the Meerkat, the Indian Grey Mongoose can be seen. This species, native to South Asia, is a versatile and opportunistic predator, known for its agility and adaptability. With their slender bodies and long, pointed snouts, Indian Grey Mongoose are adept hunters, preying on a wide variety of prey, including rodents, snakes, and birds. In the middle of the image, the Common Kusimanse is shown. This nocturnal primate is native to the forests of Central and East Africa. With their bushy tails, pointed snouts, and long, slender limbs, Kusimanses are well-adapted to their arboreal lifestyle. They are omnivorous, feeding on fruits, insects, and small vertebrates. Finally, the Asian Palm Civet, depicted in the background, is a medium-sized mammal native to Southeast Asia. With their short, dense fur, long, bushy tails, and distinctive markings, Palm Civets are well-camouflaged in their forest habitat. They are omnivorous, feeding on fruits, nuts, seeds, and small vertebrates. This beautiful and intricately detailed lithograph not only showcases the unique physical characteristics of these four species but also provides a glimpse into the natural history of the 19th century, offering a fascinating window into the natural world of over 170 years ago.
