EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcoloured lithograph depicts Marie de Bourgogne, also known as Mary Duchess of Burgundy (1457-1482), in a stunning portrait reminiscent of the Flemish painting school of Jan Van Eyck. Marie was the eldest daughter of Charles the Bold, Duke of Burgundy, and Isabel of Portugal. In 1477, she married Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I, marking the beginning of a significant political alliance between the House of Burgundy and the Habsburgs. Marie is depicted in the image wearing a richly decorated robe of purple velvet, adorned with gold embroidery and intricate pearl and gemstone detailing. A fur-lined mantle, draped over her shoulders, adds an extra layer of warmth and luxury. Her elaborate headdress, featuring a large pearl and diamond pendant, completes her regal appearance. The lithograph is taken from "Costumes Historiques de la France," a series published by Le Bibliophile Jacob, also known as Paul Lacroix, in Paris in 1852. The meticulous attention to detail in the lithograph, particularly in the textures and patterns of Marie's clothing, is a testament to the high-quality production values of the series. Marie's life was marked by political intrigue and tragedy. She outlived her husband Maximilian and her father, Charles the Bold, and became regent for her son, Philip the Handsome, until his coming of age. Her reign was a time of peace and prosperity for the Burgundian Netherlands, and her legacy continues to be celebrated in both Belgian and Austrian history.
