This chromolithograph depicts Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, Duc de Bourgogne (1411-1467), proudly displaying the standard of his noble house. The image is taken from Loredan Larchey's Ancient Equestrian Armorials of the Order of the Golden Fleece and Europe in the 15th Century, published in Paris in 1890. The Duke is shown in full regalia, wearing the distinctive insignia of the Order of the Golden Fleece, a prestigious and influential chivalric order founded by Duke Philip's father, John the Fearless, in 1430. The standard of the Duke of Burgundy is richly adorned with the fleur-de-lis, the arms of Burgundy, and the emblem of the Order of the Golden Fleece, a golden wool fleece on a red background. The Duke's horse, also bedecked with ornate trappings, mirrors the grandeur of its rider. This impressive print, taken from the illustrated manuscript 4790 in the Bibliotheque de l'Arsenal, offers a glimpse into the opulence and power of the Duke of Burgundy during the late Middle Ages.
