EDITORS COMMENTS
Madame Roland: A Symbol of Courage and Defiance during the French Revolution This handcoloured lithograph depicts Madame Roland, born Marie-Jeanne Phlippon Roland, a prominent figure during the French Revolution and a Girondist. The image captures her in the height of her political influence, adorned in the fashionable attire of the late 18th century. Her regal posture and determined gaze convey a sense of strength and resolve. Born in 1754, Madame Roland rose to prominence as the wife of a successful lawyer and later became a confidante of King Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antoinette. However, her political beliefs shifted during the early years of the Revolution, and she became an ardent supporter of the Girondins, a moderate political faction. Her salon, located in her Parisian townhouse, became a hub for political discourse and strategy. Despite her influential position, Madame Roland's fate was not to last. In 1793, during the Reign of Terror, she was arrested and brought before the Revolutionary Tribunal on charges of treason. Refusing to deny her beliefs or implicate her friends, she was sentenced to death by guillotine. Her execution on November 8, 1793, marked the end of an era for the Girondins and the beginning of the Thermidorian Reign. This poignant image serves as a reminder of Madame Roland's courage and defiance in the face of adversity. Her unwavering commitment to her political beliefs, even in the face of death, continues to inspire generations.
