EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate engraving showcases the Lowland Tapir, Tapirus terrestris, a fascinating and elusive creature of the tropical rainforests. The Lowland Tapir is the smallest of the four tapir species, with an average length of 2.5 meters and a weight of up to 300 kg. This image, taken from Edward Griffiths' seminal work "The Animal Kingdom" by the Baron Cuvier, published in London by Whittaker in 1824, captures the animal's distinctive features with remarkable detail. The Lowland Tapir is easily recognizable by its short, prehensile snout, which it uses to grasp and manipulate vegetation. Its body is covered in dark, rough skin, and its limbs are short and sturdy, adapted for moving through dense forests. The tapir's ears are small and rounded, and its eyes are large and expressive. The Lowland Tapir is an important herbivore in its ecosystem, feeding on a wide variety of vegetation, including leaves, fruits, and shoots. It is also an excellent swimmer and can be found near rivers and swamps. Unfortunately, this species is currently listed as Vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) due to habitat loss and fragmentation, hunting, and roadkill. This beautiful illustration not only serves as a testament to the natural history and zoological knowledge of the past but also highlights the importance of preserving the world's diverse wildlife populations for future generations.
