EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored lithograph depicts Louis Bonaparte (1778-1846), the younger brother of the legendary Napoleon Bonaparte, in the uniform of a colonel in the Carabiniers of the King of Holland's army. The image is an exquisite example from the esteemed collection "Costumes Historiques de la France" by Paul Lacroix, published by the Administration de Librairie in Paris in 1852. Louis Bonaparte's military career began in earnest when Napoleon, then the First Consul, appointed him as the King of Holland in 1806. The new monarchy was established to consolidate French control over the Netherlands, and Louis, with his military background, was an ideal choice to lead the Dutch forces. He served as the military commander-in-chief and wore the uniform of a colonel in the Carabiniers, as seen in this striking portrait. The Carabiniers were an elite cavalry unit, and their distinctive uniforms were a symbol of power and prestige. The uniform depicted in the lithograph features a red coat with gold trim, a white waistcoat, and a blue cravat. The colonel's epaulets are adorned with golden stars, and his sword, hanging at his side, adds an air of authority. This image not only showcases the grandeur of the Napoleonic era but also offers a glimpse into the life of an important yet often overlooked figure in European history. Louis Bonaparte's reign as King of Holland may have been brief, but his military accomplishments and influence on European politics left a lasting impact.
