EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcoloured woodblock engraving is taken from Adam Lonicer's Krauterbuch, or Herbal, published in Frankfurt in 1557. The illustration depicts two medicinal herbs, Lesser Celandine (Ficaria verna) and Fumitory (Fumaria officinalis), both of which were widely used in European herbal medicine during the Renaissance period. Lesser Celandine, also known as Chelidonium minus or Scrophularia verna, is a perennial herb that blooms early in the spring, often before the other flowers have emerged. Its bright yellow flowers are arranged in a rosette at the end of the stem, and its leaves are palmate and lobed. The plant was believed to have healing properties, particularly for liver and gallbladder ailments, and was also used as a remedy for jaundice and skin conditions. Fumitory, or Fumaria officinalis, is a trailing annual herb with delicate, fern-like leaves and pink or purple flowers. It was used in traditional medicine for a variety of ailments, including wounds, ulcers, and skin conditions, as well as for digestive issues and as a diuretic. The plant's name derives from the Latin word "fumus," meaning smoke, due to its ability to emit a smoky odour when burned. This botanical illustration is a beautiful example of the intricate detail and artistry that characterized herbals of the time. The image is accompanied by captions in Latin, Greek, French, Italian, and English manuscript, reflecting the international reach of herbal knowledge during the Renaissance. The illustration is a pirate edition or atlas of illustrations only, with no text, making it a valuable resource for botanical research and study.
