EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the moment of inspiration as renowned British artist John Hassall sketches at a Red Cross fundraising event in Kidbrooke Park, London during the final year of World War I. Surrounded by the verdant beauty of the park, Hassall focuses intently on his easel, his brush deftly capturing the scene before him. To his left, Major Devitt, who organized the sports for the men of the Royal Field Artillery, looks on approvingly. John Hassall's contributions to the war effort were immense, with the artist regularly making appearances at hospitals and fundraisers to create humorous sketches that were later auctioned off. Hassall's unique ability to bring laughter and joy during such a trying time made him a beloved figure among the soldiers and civilians alike. The Great War, also known as World War I, had been raging since 1914, and the Red Cross played a crucial role in providing aid and comfort to those affected by the conflict. Fundraising events like this one were essential in supporting the organization's efforts, and Hassall's art played a significant role in raising both awareness and funds for the cause. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the power of art and creativity to bring hope and healing during difficult times. The image of Hassall at work, surrounded by the verdant beauty of Kidbrooke Park, stands as a testament to the resilience and determination of the human spirit in the face of adversity.
