Jeanne d'Albret, Jeanne II, Queen of Navarre (1528-1572): A Regal Figure of the French Renaissance This exquisite handcoloured lithograph depicts Jeanne d'Albret, also known as Jeanne II, the queen of Navarre during the reign of King Charles IX of France. The portrait, taken from Roger de Gaignières gallery portfolio IX 17, was published in Paris by Le Bibliophile Jacob under the title "Costumes Historiques de la France" in 1852. Jeanne d'Albret was a remarkable figure of the French Renaissance. Born in 1528, she became queen of Navarre in 1555 following the death of her husband, Henry II of Navarre. Her reign was marked by her strong-willed character and her commitment to the Protestant faith, which put her at odds with the Catholic monarchy of France. In this portrait, Jeanne II is depicted in regal attire, wearing a richly embroidered gown adorned with intricate floral patterns and a fur-lined mantle. Her elaborate headdress, featuring a tall, conical structure topped with a jeweled cross, is a testament to the opulence of the French court during this period. Her expression is serious and resolute, reflecting the challenges she faced as a queen in a time of religious and political turmoil. Despite the pressures of her position, Jeanne II remained a devoted patron of the arts and a champion of the Protestant cause. She was known for her generosity and her support of the Huguenot movement, earning her the nickname "The Good Queen Jeanne." Her legacy continues to inspire scholars and artists to this day, as a symbol of courage and resilience in the face of adversity. This handcoloured lithograph is a beautiful and intricate record of a fascinating historical figure, capturing the essence of Jeanne II's regal presence and the opulence of the French Renaissance court.
