Incredible Patrol Plaque, Elst Town Hall, Holland
Following the failure of Operation Market Garden to establish a foothold across the Rhine at Arnhem, the front line effectively lay along the river itself. This tiled plaque, once in Heteren Town Hall, tells the story of Hugo Sims, Peter Frank, William Canfield, Frederick Becker, Robert Nicholai and Roland Wilbur of 501st PIR who, on the night of 29 October 1944, crossed the Rhine at Heteren, some 18 km west of Arnhem, in rubber dinghies. They landed to the east of Renkum, slipped behind enemy lines, reached the Ede-Arnhem highway and then hid during daylight the following day. That evening they captured thirty-two enemy officers and men and brought them back across the Rhine. Date: 2001

EDITORS COMMENTS
This commemorative plaque, installed in Elst Town Hall in Holland in 2001, honors the bravery and determination of six American soldiers from the 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment (501st PIR): Hugo Sims, Peter Frank, William Canfield, Frederick Becker, Robert Nicholai, and Roland Wilbur. The event memorialized on the plaque took place on the night of October 29, 1944, during the aftermath of Operation Market Garden. With the failure of this mission to establish a foothold across the Rhine at Arnhem, the front line had effectively shifted to the river itself. These soldiers, having crossed the Rhine at Heteren, some 18 km west of Arnhem, in rubber dinghies, managed to slip behind enemy lines and reach the Ede-Arnhem highway. They spent the following day hiding from the enemy before carrying out a daring raid that evening. During this operation, they successfully captured thirty-two enemy officers and men and brought them back across the Rhine. The courage and resourcefulness of these soldiers, who faced the risks of enemy fire and the treacherous waters of the Rhine, serve as a testament to the resilience and tenacity of the Allied forces during World War II. This plaque, a reminder of their heroic actions, stands as a significant piece of local and military history in Elst Town Hall.
