EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely hand-colored copperplate engraving captures the solitary figure of a hermit in his cell at the Sanctuary of Monserrato on the Isle of Elba. The hermit, with a pious expression on his face, is engrossed in reading a book, surrounded by religious icons and the company of rodents. The Sanctuary of Monserrato, located in Porto Azzurro, was a popular pilgrimage site in the 18th century, attracting visitors from all over Europe. The hermit's simple cell, adorned with a shrine to the Virgin of Guadalupe, reflects the deep spiritual devotion that characterized the Catholic Church during this period. The offering on the altar, consisting of a candle and a bouquet of flowers, attests to the frequent visits of the faithful. The hermit's attire, with its long robe and hood, is reminiscent of the monastic traditions of Extremadura in Spain. The lady in the background, dressed in a veil and holding a rosary, pays her respects to the Madonna of Guadalupe, her hands folded in prayer. This illustration is taken from Giulio Ferrario's "Costumes Ancient and Modern of the Peoples of the World," published in Florence in 1829. The meticulous detail and historical accuracy of the engraving make it a valuable document of the religious and cultural practices of the time.
