EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored copperplate engraving, taken from Friedrich Johann Bertuch's Bilderbuch fur Kinder (Picture Book for Children), published in Weimar in 1792, showcases a fantastical gathering of mythical creatures. At the center, the Harpy, with the upper body of a woman and the lower body and wings of a bird, spreads her wings protectively over her young. Nearby, the Griffin, a legendary creature with the body, tail, and back legs of a lion; the head and wings of an eagle; and an serpent-like tongue, gazes intently. To the left, a Satyr, half-man and half-goat, plays a pan flute, his mischievous grin evident. A Titan or Giant, towering over the others, holds a club and wears a menacing expression. In the watery depths, a Seahorse swims gracefully, while a Nereid or Triton, the sea god, emerges from the waves, his trident in hand. This engraving is a testament to the rich and diverse mythology that was a part of children's education during the 18th century. The encyclopedic Bilderbuch fur Kinder aimed to teach natural history, geography, and mythology to its young readers through visually engaging illustrations. The mythical creatures in this image, drawn from various cultures and mythologies, served to spark the imagination and expand the knowledge of the young audience. The intricate details and vibrant colors of this hand-colored copperplate engraving transport us to a magical world where Harpies, Griffins, Satyrs, Giants, Seahorses, and Nereids coexist, inviting us to explore the wonders of mythology and the power of imagination.
