EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured copperplate engraving by Fumagalli, from Giulio Ferrario's "Costumes Ancient and Modern of the Peoples of the World," published in Florence in 1826, depicts the thrilling Greek torch race, or Corsa delle Fiaccole. In this ancient athletic competition, participants raced against each other while carrying lit torches without allowing them to be extinguished. The scene unfolds at the altar of Prometheus, the mythological figure who brought fire to humanity, adding an extra layer of significance to the event. The illustration showcases a chariot pulling up to the starting line, its driver and horses poised for the race. Athletes, dressed in traditional Greek attire, are gathered nearby, their torches held aloft. The quadriga, a four-horse chariot, was a common mode of transportation in ancient Greece and adds to the authenticity of the scene. A vase sits at the base of the altar, filled with water, perhaps for the athletes to quench their thirst during the grueling race. Sir William Hamilton, a British diplomat, is known to have collected this print, as evidenced by the inscription on the bottom right corner, "H.R.H. The Duke of Buccleuch's Collection, from Sir William Hamilton." Hamilton was a prominent figure in the art world and amassed an impressive collection of ancient art and antiquities during his time in Naples. The intricate details and vibrant colors of this engraving provide a glimpse into the rich history and culture of ancient Greece, making it a valuable addition to any historical collection or study of Greek mythology, fashion, and sports.
