The Gem of Augustus,
EDITORS COMMENTS
or Gemma Augustea, is a captivating sardonyx cameo that showcases the apotheosis, or divine exaltation, of the ancient Roman Emperor Augustus. This intricately detailed cameo, created as a hand-colored copperplate engraving by Corsi from Giulio Ferrario's "Costumes Ancient and Modern of the Peoples of the World" published in Florence in 1844, offers a vivid depiction of Augustus' triumphant victory over his Germanic, Dalmatian, and Celtic enemies. Augustus, the first Roman Emperor, is depicted in the center, proudly standing atop the world, or Oikoumene, with Roma, the personification of Rome, at his side. Neptune, the Roman god of the sea, and Gaia, the goddess of the Earth, also join in the celebration, each trampling on the armor of the defeated enemies. Augustus' parents, Gaius Octavius and Atia, are shown looking up at their son in admiration, while Tiberius and Livia, Augustus' successors, also pay homage to his greatness. The Gem of Augustus, now housed at the Sainte-Chapelle in Paris, is a testament to the power and grandeur of ancient Rome. The sardonyx gemstone, with its alternating bands of red and white agate, adds an exquisite beauty to the cameo, making it a true gem of historical and artistic significance. This illustration offers a fascinating glimpse into the fashion and history of the ancient world, providing a captivating visual representation of one of the most iconic figures in Roman history.
