EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcolored engraving showcases three distinct species of South American lanternflies: Fulgora graciliceps, Fulgora laternaria, and Fulgora castresii. The intricate detail of the illustration, created by Blanchard and masterfully hand-colored by Fournier, was originally published in Charles d'Orbigny's Universal Dictionary of Natural History in Paris, 1849. The South American lanternflies, also known as peanut bugs or peanut-headed lanternflies due to their distinctive, bulbous heads, belong to the Fulgoridae family. These insects are native to Central and South America and are characterized by their unique, bioluminescent organs located on their dorsal thorax, which they use for communication and camouflage. The Fulgora graciliceps, depicted on the left, is a medium-sized lanternfly with a yellowish-brown body and black markings. The Fulgora laternaria, in the middle, is slightly larger and has a more elongated body with a reddish-brown coloration and distinct black markings. The Fulgora castresii, on the right, is the smallest of the three species, with a more slender body and a reddish-brown coloration. These fascinating insects were often compared to alligator heads due to their unique appearance. The lanternflies were of great interest to naturalists of the 19th century, and their discovery and documentation played an essential role in the advancement of entomology. This beautiful engraving is a testament to the intrigue and wonder that these creatures inspired during that time.
