EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured lithograph showcases the renowned French baritone, Paul Barroilhet, in the title role of Camoens from Gaetano Donizetti's opera "Dom Sebastien." The image, taken from the Galerie Dramatique: Costumes des Theatres de Paris, published in Paris in 1844, is an illustration by Victor Dollet, with additional hand-coloring by Alexande Lacauchie and Louis Lasalle. Paul Barroilhet (1808-1871) was a celebrated French singer, known for his powerful and expressive voice. He made his debut at the Théâtre-Italien in Paris in 1831 and quickly rose to fame, performing in leading roles in operas by Bellini, Donizetti, and Verdi. In "Dom Sebastien," Barroilhet portrayed the tragic figure of Camoens, a poet and courtier who is torn between his love for the queen and his loyalty to the king. The opera, composed by Gaetano Donizetti in 1843, is based on the historical figure of Camoens, who lived in the 16th century in Portugal. The libretto, written by Jules-Henri Vernoy de Saint-Georges and Eugène Scribe, tells the story of Camoens' love for the queen, Donna Anna, and his eventual exile from the court after the king's death. The lithograph captures Barroilhet in the moment of intense emotion, with his expressive face and gesturing hand conveying the depth of his character. The intricate details of his costume, with its rich fabrics and ornate accessories, add to the grandeur of the opera production. Overall, this image is a testament to the artistry of both the singer and the illustrators, and provides a glimpse into the world of 19th-century French opera.
