EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely hand-colored engraving depicts the Four-horned Antelope, Tetracerus quadricornis, also known as the Chousingha. This rare and vulnerable antelope species is native to the dry forests and thorny savannas of the Indian subcontinent. The Four-horned Antelope is unique among antelopes for its distinctive physical feature - two sets of horns. The larger, curved horns are located above the antelope's eyes and are used primarily for defense against predators. The smaller, shorter horns, which appear as small points on the forehead, are non-functional and are believed to serve as camouflage. The Four-horned Antelope is a ruminant, meaning it chews its cud, and is herbivorous, feeding on a variety of vegetation including leaves, shoots, and fruits. They are social animals that form small herds, led by a dominant male. This engraving is from Edward Griffiths' "The Animal Kingdom" by the Baron Cuvier, published in London by Whittaker in 1827. The illustration was created by Charles Hamilton Smith and hand-colored by H. Kearsley. The Natural History and Zoology communities were in a period of great exploration and discovery during this time, and works such as this one were instrumental in documenting and preserving knowledge of the natural world. The Four-horned Antelope, with its intriguing appearance and unique features, was a subject of great interest and fascination during this era of natural history exploration.
