Flying Through the Air: Mademoiselle Dutrien's Daring Act at Crystal Palace, 1904 This photograph captures the moment of suspense and thrill as Mademoiselle Dutrien, also known as the 'Human Arrow,' performs her death-defying stunt at the Crystal Palace in London, 1904. The French mademoiselle fearlessly rides her bicycle down a steep, curving track that plunges some seventy feet in height, with an angle of over fifty degrees. As she reaches the end of the track, Mademoiselle Dutrien jumps a non-existent gap, harnessing the great velocity gained from the descent. With a daring leap of faith, she spins through the air, soaring between thirty and forty feet before landing on the opposite side of where she began. The Crystal Palace, a grand exhibition center and amusement park, was the perfect stage for such thrilling acts. Mademoiselle Dutrien's performance was just one of many daring stunts that captivated audiences during the early 1900s. The photograph, taken in 1904, showcases the female cyclist in mid-air, her expression a mix of determination and excitement. The image is a testament to the courage and skill of early performers, who pushed the boundaries of what was possible on a bicycle. Mademoiselle Dutrien's act was a sensation, drawing crowds from all corners of London. Her daring stunt on the Flume at Crystal Palace remains an iconic moment in the history of cycling and performance art.
