Erected by the 2nd Platoon of the 607th Graves Registration Company on June 7, 1944, this marker signifies the first American battle burials in Europe during World War II. The graves, numbering approximately 457, were initially located on the beach to honor the fallen heroes. However, the team carefully moved the bodies to St. Laurent Cemetery during the night of June 10, to prevent demoralizing incoming troops and to minimize the risk of enemy fire.
