EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored copperplate engraving, created by Theodore Goetz for Friedrich Johann Bertuch's Bilderbuch fur Kinder (Picture Book for Children) in 1823, showcases an enchanting collection of exotic and extinct parrots. The extinct Cuban red macaw (Ara tricolor) grabs our attention with its brilliant red, blue, and green plumage. Once native to Cuba, this magnificent bird is now sadly extinct due to habitat loss and hunting. Adjacent to the Cuban red macaw, the blue-backed parrot (Tanygnathus sumatranus) can be found. This parrot, native to the Moluccas and Sulawesi in Indonesia, is depicted in its male (cyanopygius) and female forms. The male is characterized by its bright blue back and red underparts, while the female sports a green back and yellow underparts. Sadly, this species is currently considered critically endangered due to habitat loss and poaching. The crimson rosella (Platycercus elegans) and Eastern rosella (Platycercus eximius) are also featured in this illustration. The crimson rosella, native to Australia, is known for its vibrant red plumage and distinctive yellow and black stripes around its face. In contrast, the Eastern rosella, native to New Guinea and northeastern Australia, sports a green body with red wings and a yellow underbelly. Both species are still found in the wild but are considered vulnerable due to habitat loss and hunting. This stunning artwork not only serves as a testament to the natural beauty of these parrots but also highlights the importance of conservation efforts to protect these magnificent creatures from extinction.
