EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely hand-colored steel engraving, created by du Casse after an illustration by Adolph Fries, showcases two captivating and vibrant parrot species: the Eastern Rosella (Platycercus exams) and the Yellow-crowned Amazon (Amazona ochrocephala). The Eastern Rosella, also known as the Multicolored Parrot, is a native of Australia, recognized by its brilliant green plumage, with a red underbelly, blue-grey wings, and a distinctive orange-red beak. The Yellow-crowned Amazon, on the other hand, is a South American parrot, easily identified by its yellow crown, red and green feathers, and a large, powerful beak. Both parrots are depicted perched on branches, their feathers ruffling gently in the breeze. This stunning artwork is taken from Felix-Edouard Guerin-Meneville's Dictionnaire Pittoresque d'Histoire Naturelle (Picturesque Dictionary of Natural History), published in Paris between 1834 and 1839. The Dictionnaire Pittoresque was a comprehensive and beautifully illustrated natural history reference work, featuring a wide array of animals, plants, and minerals. The hand-colored engravings, such as this one, were produced using the intaglio printing technique, which involved etching lines into a metal plate and then inking and pressing paper onto it. The intricate detail and lifelike quality of this engraving serve to highlight the beauty and diversity of these two parrot species, showcasing the skill and artistry of both the illustrator and the engraver. The Eastern Rosella and the Yellow-crowned Amazon continue to captivate and inspire appreciation for the natural world and the intricate designs found within it.
