EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored copperplate engraving, taken from René Primevere's "Lessons Complements de Buffon" published by Pourrat Frères in Paris in 1838, showcases two fascinating and distinctly Australian marsupials: the Eastern Quoll (Dasyurus viverrinus) and the Maluku Kangaroo, also known as the Pelandok or Maluku Wallaby (Dorcopsis species). The Eastern Quoll, a small, agile marsupial, is native to eastern Australia and Tasmania. Its coat is predominantly brown with white spots and stripes, while its face is marked with distinctive white patches around the eyes and mouth. This nocturnal creature is an omnivore, feeding on a variety of foods including insects, small vertebrates, and vegetation. The Maluku Kangaroo, on the other hand, is native to the Maluku Islands in Indonesia. This wallaby species is characterized by its reddish-brown fur, short ears, and a distinctive white stripe running down the center of its face. The Maluku Kangaroo is a herbivore, feeding primarily on leaves, shoots, and bark. Both species are important components of their respective ecosystems, playing crucial roles in maintaining the balance of their habitats. The Eastern Quoll, in particular, is an apex predator in its environment, while the Maluku Kangaroo helps to maintain the health of the vegetation through its grazing habits. This beautiful and intricately detailed engraving not only showcases the natural history of these two fascinating marsupials but also highlights the skill and artistry of the engraver and the publishers of the time. It is a testament to the beauty and diversity of the natural world and the importance of preserving and documenting it for future generations.
