EDITORS COMMENTS
The Dogger Bank Incident, also known as the Russian Outrage, took place on October 22, 1904, in the North Sea. In the midst of the Russo-Japanese War, the Russian Baltic Fleet, en route to reinforce the 1st Pacific Squadron at Port Arthur, mistakenly identified 48 harmless British trawlers at Dogger Bank as an Imperial Japanese Navy force. The Russian ships opened fire, resulting in the tragic loss of three British lives - two seamen drowned in the chaos, and one crew member from the Moulmein trawler succumbed to shock a year later. This poignant postcard image captures the damaged Moulmein and its lucky crew, who had miraculously returned to port alive. The hole in the hull is evident, and the lifebelts hung on the side of the vessel serve as a grim reminder of the close call. The paranoia and friendly fire incident at Dogger Bank underscores the tense atmosphere of the time, with both sides on high alert and prone to misidentification in the dark waters of the North Sea. This historical postcard, with the reference number 12048829, offers a glimpse into the past and the human cost of the Russo-Japanese War.
