EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured copperplate engraving by Luigi Giarre, taken from Giulio Ferrario's Costumes Ancient and Modern of the Peoples of the World, published in Florence in 1845, captures the grandeur and splendor of a ceremonial procession in 15th century Venice. At the center of the image stands the Doge of Venice, Antonio Verico, dressed in his ornate robes and crowned with the Doge's hat, or "cappa ed tocc," symbolizing his dual role as both the temporal ruler of Venice and the spiritual protector of Saint Mark. Accompanying the Doge is the Procurator of Saint Mark, Juan de Juanes, dressed in equally impressive attire. The Procurator, responsible for the administration of the Saint Mark's Basilica and the religious affairs of Venice, wears a red robe and a mitre adorned with gold and precious stones. The occasion depicted in the engraving is likely the Doge's triumphal entry into Venice or a procession to Saint Mark's Basilica. The Doge is shown seated on a throne atop a wagon, drawn by four horses, while the Procurator rides on a horse beside him. The image also includes members of the Venetian nobility, dressed in various suits of armor, adding to the sense of pageantry and military might. The influence of the Aragonese king, Alfonso V of Naples, is evident in the Doge's attire, reflecting the political alliances and cultural exchanges between the two powerful Mediterranean powers during the 15th century. This magnificent illustration provides a fascinating glimpse into the rich history of Venice and the fashion of the time, offering a captivating visual record of a bygone era.
