EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured copperplate engraving by Giarre and Stanghi, taken from Giulio Ferrario's "Costumes Ancient and Modern of the Peoples of the World," published in Florence in 1847, depicts a pivotal moment in English history: Catherine of Aragon pleading her case against divorce from King Henry VIII in front of the Papal legates. Catherine, dressed in the regal attire of the time, is shown kneeling before the legates, her hands clasped in supplication. Her expression is one of determination and resolve, as she fights for her right to remain Queen consort of England. Behind her, King Henry VIII, clad in the robes of a monarch, looks on impassively, his face betraying no emotion. The scene takes place in the hallowed halls of the English court, where the law of the land and the decrees of the Church were intertwined. Catherine, a Spanish princess and the daughter of Ferdinand and Isabella of Spain, had been married to Henry VIII since 1509. Their union had produced one daughter, Mary Tudor, who would later become Queen of England. However, when Catherine failed to produce a male heir, Henry sought to annul the marriage and marry Anne Boleyn. The Papal legates, sent by Pope Clement VII to hear the case, held the power to grant the annulment. Catherine's pleas for mercy and justice were met with a stern and unyielding response from the legates, who ultimately sided with the King. The divorce was granted, and Catherine was banished from the court, spending the remainder of her days in various convents. This powerful and evocative image captures the drama and intrigue of the Tudor court, as well as the complex interplay of politics, religion, and personal relationships that shaped the lives of its inhabitants. It serves as a poignant reminder of the human cost of historical events and the enduring power of the past to captivate and inspire us.
