EDITORS COMMENTS
This intriguing lithograph by Karl Joseph Brodtmann, from Heinrich Rudolf Schinz's Illustrated Natural History of Men and Animals published in 1836, showcases a captivating assembly of four distinct canine breeds: Dingo (Canis dingo), Sheepdog (Canis domesticus), Scent Hound (Canis gallicus), and Pomeranian (Canis pomeranus). The Dingo, an ancient Australian breed, is depicted in its wild form with a lean body, pointed ears, and a bushy tail. Originally from Asia, the Dingo is believed to be the earliest known domesticated dog in the Pacific region. The Sheepdog, a versatile and intelligent breed, is shown in its working attire, with a collared neck and a focused expression. Bred for herding sheep, this breed is known for its agility, loyalty, and strong bond with its human companions. The Scent Hound, represented by the Gallic Hound or Bloodhound, is illustrated with its long, droopy ears and an intense gaze. This breed is renowned for its exceptional sense of smell, making it an excellent tracker and hunter. Lastly, the Pomeranian, a small and lively breed, is portrayed in its regal best, adorned with a collar and a leash. Originally from the Pomerania region of Europe, this breed was once much larger but was later miniaturized and became a popular companion animal. This stunning lithograph not only highlights the diverse range of canine breeds but also showcases the meticulous detail and artistry of 19th-century natural history illustration.
