EDITORS COMMENTS
This image is taken from Curtis's British Entomology, a seminal work in the field of entomology published between 1824 and 1839. Plate 93 showcases the intricate details of the Hymenopteran species, Clavellaria marginata, also known as the Yellow-margined Sawfly. The Sawfly belongs to the family Ledipoteridae and is depicted alongside its host plant, Pyrola media, commonly known as Intermediate Wintergreen. The Sawfly is a slender insect, with a distinctive yellow margin on its wings, giving it its name. The adult insect is shown in the upper left corner of the plate, while the larvae, which resemble small caterpillars, are illustrated in the lower right corner. The host plant, Pyrola media, is depicted in the lower left corner, providing context to the relationship between the Sawfly and its food source. The meticulous illustration of this plate was produced during the 1820s and 1830s, making it an essential contribution to the scientific record of the natural world during the 19th century. The work of John Curtis, FLS, who oversaw the publication of this plate, remains a testament to the dedication and curiosity of naturalists during this period. This plate also includes a representation of other Hymenopteran orders, such as the Lepidoptera, which includes butterflies and moths. The presence of these insects highlights the comprehensive nature of Curtis's work and its importance in advancing the understanding of the natural world during the 19th century.
