EDITORS COMMENTS
This image is taken from Curtis's British Entomology, Plate 240, featuring the Coleoptera or beetle species, Berosus aericeps, also known as Berosus signaticollis, commonly referred to as the Water-beetle. The beetle is shown perched on the delicate leaves of Cochlearia anglica, also known as English Scurvy-grass. The intricate details of both the beetle and the plant are beautifully rendered in this engraving, which was produced between 1824 and 1839. The Water-beetle, a member of the subfamily Ledipodinae, is characterized by its large, elongated body and long, powerful legs, which enable it to swim and dive in water. The species is easily identified by the distinctive red spots on its head and pronotum, as well as the white markings on its elytra or wing cases. The English Scurvy-grass, a native plant of Europe, is shown in its natural habitat, growing along the shores of bodies of water. This plant was historically important as a source of vitamin C for sailors, who were at risk of developing scurvy due to their long sea voyages. This stunning illustration is a testament to the meticulous work of John Curtis, FLS, the renowned English botanist and entomologist, who dedicated his career to documenting the natural world around him. The plate is a prime example of the high-quality illustrations produced during the 19th century, which continue to captivate and inspire us today.
