EDITORS COMMENTS
This image is taken from Curtis's British Entomology, Plate 144, featuring the Spotted Cacidula or Coccidula scutellata beetle (Coleoptera: Cacidula scutellata) in its natural habitat. The beetle is depicted gracefully perched on the leaves of Cardamine bulbifera, also known as Bulbiferous Coral-wort or Dentaria bulbifera. The intricate details of the beetle's body and the delicate veins of the plant's leaves are beautifully rendered in this exquisite 19th-century illustration. The Spotted Cacidula is a small, brightly-colored beetle, with a distinctive spotted pattern on its elytra (wing cases). This species is a member of the family Ledipteridae and is native to Europe and Asia. The beetle's elongated snout and slender legs are adapted for probing the soil for food, primarily feeding on fungi and decaying plant material. The Cardamine bulbifera is a herbaceous perennial plant that was commonly found in damp meadows and woodlands during the 1800s. Its charming, heart-shaped leaves and delicate, white flowers make it a popular subject for naturalists and botanical illustrators of the time. The plant's bulbous roots were believed to have medicinal properties and were used to treat various ailments. This stunning plate, created between 1824 and 1839, is a testament to the meticulous work of the talented naturalist and botanical illustrator, John Curtis (FLS). Curtis's British Entomology was a groundbreaking publication that showcased the natural history of the British Isles and provided a valuable record of the country's insect fauna during the 19th century.
