This 16th century illustration, titled "Costume of the Swedes," is an exquisite example of the traditional attire worn by the Swedish people during this era. The engraving, created by Dell Acqua and hand-colored by Lazaretti, is taken from Andrew Swinton's "Travels into Norway, Denmark and Russia," published in Milan between 1815 and 1817. The Swedish man depicted in the illustration wears a high-waisted doublet, which is cinched at the waist with a thick belt. Over the doublet, he dons a long, voluminous cape, which is fastened at the shoulders and falls open at the front. The cape is adorned with intricate lace patterns, adding a touch of elegance to the outfit. Beneath the doublet, the man wears breeches, which are held up by a belt and are fitted at the thighs but flare out at the hips. The breeches are paired with a petticoat, which is visible beneath the skirt of the doublet. The man's collar is also adorned with lace, and he wears a ruff around his neck, which is a fashionable accessory of the time. The Swedish woman in the illustration wears a fitted bodice, which is laced up at the front and is adorned with intricate lace patterns. Over the bodice, she wears a full skirt, which is gathered at the waist and falls in soft folds to the ground. Her petticoat is also visible beneath the skirt, adding volume and fullness to the outfit.
