EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured lithograph depicts the elaborate costume of a Ministre Grand-Juge, or Grand Judge, from the Napoleonic era. The Ministre Grand-Juge was a high-ranking judicial officer in the French judiciary during the Napoleonic period, responsible for presiding over criminal and civil cases of great importance. The costume itself is a testament to the opulence and grandeur of the Napoleonic era. The Ministre Grand-Juge is depicted wearing a long, voluminous robe of deep purple velvet, trimmed with ermine fur. The ermine, a symbol of royalty and purity, was a common adornment for the robes of high-ranking officials during this period. The robe is fastened with a large, ornate cross, also trimmed with ermine fur, which signifies the judge's authority and office. The Ministre Grand-Juge wears a white shirt with a lace jabot at the neck, and a white cravat. His wig, known as a peruke, is powdered and styled in the fashionable "Fontainebleau" style of the time. The judge carries a scepter in one hand, a symbol of his power and authority, and a rolled-up parchment in the other, likely containing the laws and decrees he would have presided over in court. This beautiful lithograph is from "Costumes Historiques de la France," a series published by Le Bibliophile Jacob, also known as Paul Lacroix, in Paris in 1852. The series was designed to document and preserve the historical costumes of France, and this image of the Ministre Grand-Juge provides a fascinating glimpse into the judicial attire of the Napoleonic era.
