EDITORS COMMENTS
Step back in time to the quaint and unique Corby Pole Fair in Northamptonshire, England, as depicted in this photograph from 1902. This traditional English event, held every twenty years on Whit-Monday, is a cherished custom that celebrates a charter granted to the people of Corby by Queen Elizabeth I in 1585 and later confirmed by Charles II in 1682. As visitors entered the fair, they were greeted by the welcoming arch adorned with bunting and evergreens. The entrance was guarded by a toll booth, where a small fee was required to gain entry. Those who failed to pay the toll were playfully placed into the stocks, a humorous tradition that added to the festive atmosphere. The bustling streets of Corby were filled with laughter, music, and the aroma of delicious food. The fairground attractions, such as the Ferris wheel and merry-go-round, were a source of excitement for young and old alike. The vibrant banners and colorful decorations added to the carnival-like atmosphere, creating a scene straight out of an Edwardian postcard. This photograph captures the essence of a bygone era, offering a glimpse into the rich history and traditions of this charming English village. The Corby Pole Fair remains an important part of the community's heritage, a testament to the enduring spirit of celebration and unity that has endured for centuries.
