EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured copperplate engraving depicts a Common Warthog (Phacochoerus africanus), also known as the Cape Verde Boar or African Hog. The Common Warthog is a large, robust mammal native to Africa, with distinctive tusks and warts on its face. The warthog's tusks are long and curved, used for digging up roots and defending against predators. The warts on its face and shoulders are not true warts but are enlarged, modified sweat glands. The Common Warthog is a social animal, living in groups called sounders, which are led by a dominant boar. They are omnivores, feeding on a variety of vegetation, fruits, roots, and insects. Warthogs are well adapted to their environment, with a keen sense of smell and excellent hearing. They are also agile runners, capable of reaching speeds of up to 30 miles per hour. This illustration is from Edward Griffiths' The Animal Kingdom by the Baron Cuvier, published in London by Whittaker in 1825. The work is considered a seminal work in the field of natural history, featuring accurate and detailed illustrations of a wide range of animals. The handcolouring adds to the beauty and realism of the image, making it a valuable addition to any collection of natural history prints.
