EDITORS COMMENTS
Caraway, scientifically known as Carum carvi or Carum carvi var. meridionale, also referred to as meridian fennel, Persian cumin, or simply caraway, is a herbaceous plant belonging to the Apiaceae family. This exquisite handcoloured lithograph by Hanhart, based on a botanical illustration by David Blair, showcases the intricacies of this aromatic plant. The image captures the plant in its entirety, from the slender stems adorned with delicate feathery leaves, to the umbels of tiny white flowers, and finally, the oblong seeds that are the prized spice. Caraway was widely used in traditional herbal medicine, particularly in Europe, during the Middle Ages and beyond. Its medicinal properties were attributed to its carminative, antispasmodic, and digestive qualities. Caraway seeds were used to alleviate digestive issues, including bloating, flatulence, and colic. The essential oil obtained from the seeds was also employed for its calming effects on the nervous system and to ease respiratory conditions. The plant's botanical name, Carum carvi, is derived from the Latin words 'carum' meaning love and 'carvi' meaning caraway, reflecting the plant's popularity and value in both culinary and medicinal applications. The lithograph, published in Robert Bentley and Henry Trimen's Medicinal Plants, provides a captivating glimpse into the rich history and significance of this versatile herb.
