EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored copperplate engraving showcases the intricately detailed features of the Big Hairy Armadillo, Chaetophractus villosus. The armadillo, also known as the Large Hairy Armadillo, Hairy Armadillo, or the Fourth Tatou of D'Azara, is a unique species native to South America. Depicted in this image, the armadillo's body is covered in coarse, bristly hairs, providing excellent camouflage in its woodland habitat. Its powerful forelimbs, each equipped with sharp claws, are used for digging burrows and defense. The armadillo's elongated snout and small, beady eyes are typical of armadillo species, while its four bands of armor plates along its back are less prominent in this species compared to others. This beautiful illustration was created by James Basire in 1825, as part of Edward Griffiths' publication of "The Animal Kingdom" by the renowned French naturalist, Baron Georges Cuvier. The meticulous attention to detail in the engraving highlights the scientific accuracy and dedication to natural history during this era. The intricate patterns and textures of the armadillo's fur are particularly noteworthy, making this a captivating and visually stunning representation of this fascinating creature.
