Adam Asparagus Captions Edition Herb Herbal Krauterbuch Latin Lonicer Major Officinalis Pirate Plantago Plantain Woodblock Woodcut

EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcoloured woodblock engraving is taken from the botanical masterpiece, "Krauterbuch" or "Herbal" by Adam Lonicer, published in Frankfurt in 1557. The illustration showcases two distinct plants: Asparagus officinalis, commonly known as common asparagus or garden asparagus, and Plantago major rubrifolia, also known as red plantain or Plantago rubea. The asparagus plant, depicted in its full glory, is shown with its fern-like foliage and spear-shaped, edible shoots. Asparagus has been highly regarded for its medicinal properties since ancient times. The Greeks and Romans believed it to be an aphrodisiac, while the ancient Egyptians used it as a food source for the dead in their tombs. In European medicine, asparagus was used to treat a variety of ailments, including gout, rheumatism, and kidney disorders. The red plantain, illustrated alongside the asparagus, is shown with its broad, oblong leaves and red-tinged stems. This plant is native to Europe, Asia, and northern Africa and was used medicinally for its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. In traditional medicine, the root was used to treat wounds, burns, and skin irritations. This botanical illustration is a stunning example of the intricate detail and artistry of the 16th century. The illustration is handcoloured, adding an additional layer of beauty and depth to the engraving. The text surrounding the image is written in Latin, Greek, French, Italian, German, and English, reflecting the international reach of Lonicer's work. This pirate edition or atlas of illustrations only, without the text, offers a glimpse into the rich history of botanical discovery and the beauty of the natural world.
