EDITORS COMMENTS
This intriguing handcoloured lithograph, hailing from Georg Friedrich Treitschke's Gallery of Natural History in Leipzig, published in 1842, showcases two distinct tapeworm larvae: Bothriocephalus acheilognathi (Botryocephalus latus) and Coenurus cerebralis. The former, commonly known as the Asian tapeworm, is a freshwater fish parasite. Its larval form, depicted on the left, resides within the body of various fish species, primarily carps and catfishes. The right side of the print reveals the Coenurus cerebralis larva, also known as the larva of the tapeworm Multiceps multiceps. This parasite is unique in that it infects the brains and spinal cords of sheep, as well as other mammals. The larvae can cause significant damage to the central nervous system, leading to various neurological symptoms and, in severe cases, death. Both tapeworms have complex life cycles, involving multiple hosts. The Asian tapeworm's adult form resides in the intestines of various fish-eating birds, while the Coenurus cerebralis larvae are eventually consumed by predators, such as foxes and dogs, which then become the definitive hosts for the adult tapeworms. This print offers a glimpse into the intricate world of parasitology, showcasing the life stages of these fascinating organisms and highlighting the complex relationships between different species within an ecosystem.
