EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcoloured copperplate stipple engraving depicts the African cucumber, Momordica balsamina, also known as the balsam apple or balsam pear. The illustration is taken from Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, or Dictionary of Natural Sciences, published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The illustration was engraved by Corsi, with direction from the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin (1775-1840). Turpin is considered one of the greatest botanical illustrators of the 19th century, known for his meticulous attention to detail and ability to capture the essence of the plants he depicted. This is evident in the intricate rendering of the Momordica balsamina, with its delicate flowers, inflorescence, and the distinctive textured surface of the fruit. The African cucumber is a climbing vine native to tropical Africa, bearing small, edible fruits that are round or oval in shape and covered in small, raised bumps. The fruit is often described as having a sweet, musky flavour, and is rich in vitamins and minerals. The plant is also known for its medicinal properties, with traditional uses including the treatment of diabetes and as a remedy for digestive issues. This beautiful illustration provides a glimpse into the natural history of the African cucumber, offering a window into the botany and horticulture of the 19th century. The intricate details of the engraving, combined with the rich colours of the handcolouring, make it a stunning addition to any botanical collection.
