EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: "In Honour of the Brave: The 2nd Battalion South Wales Borderers Memorial at Asnelles, Normandy" This evocative photograph captures the 2nd Battalion South Wales Borderers Memorial, situated at Asnelles-sur-Mer in Normandy, France. The memorial stands as a poignant reminder of the bravery and sacrifice of the soldiers who were part of the 231st Brigade of the 50th Northumbrian Division, who landed here on D-Day, June 6, 1944. The black granite memorial, with its sleek, modern design, carries inscriptions in English, French, and Welsh, symbolizing the international unity and camaraderie that was forged during the war. The inscriptions read, "In memory of the Officers, Warrant Officers, Non-Commissioned Officers and Men of the 2nd Battalion South Wales Borderers who fell in the Normandy Landings 6th June 1944." The memorial was unveiled on June 5, 1994, by Brigadier Sir Nicholas Somerville Bt., in the presence of local dignitaries, veterans, and their families. On special occasions, the Welsh flag is proudly flown above the memorial, paying tribute to the proud Welsh heritage of the soldiers who fought and died on those fateful beaches. The photograph captures the peaceful, serene atmosphere of the memorial site, with the rolling waves of the English Channel in the background, adding to the sense of reflection and reverence. The memorial stands as a testament to the enduring bond between the people of Normandy and Wales, forged through the shared history of the D-Day landings and the sacrifices made by the brave soldiers of the 2nd Battalion South Wales Borderers.
