EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning botanical illustration depicts Chrysanthemum x morifolium, commonly known as the Chrysanthemum or the Chinese Chrysanthemum. The drawing is Plate 582 from the John Reeves Collection of Botanical Drawings from Canton, China, held in the Botany Library at the Natural History Museum in London. John Reeves (1774-1856) was a British merchant and botanical artist based in China during the 19th century. He made numerous botanical drawings of Chinese plants, many of which were published in Europe and contributed significantly to the understanding of Chinese flora during that time. The Chrysanthemum x morifolium is a hybrid of two Chrysanthemum species, C. indicum and C. morifolium, and is native to East Asia. This popular ornamental plant is known for its large, showy flowers that come in various colors, including red and yellow. The Chrysanthemum is a member of the Asteraceae or Compositae family, which is the largest family of flowering plants, and is classified as an eudicot, angiosperm, dicot, and magnoliophyta. The Chrysanthemum was highly valued in China for its medicinal and ornamental properties. It was believed to have therapeutic uses, including as a treatment for fever and as a tonic. The Chrysanthemum was also used in Chinese art and culture, and it continues to be an important symbol of longevity and prosperity in East Asia. This beautiful illustration captures the intricate details of the Chrysanthemum's flowers, leaves, and stems, providing a glimpse into the rich botanical heritage of China during the 19th century. The drawing also serves as a reminder of the important role that botanical illustrations played in the exploration and documentation of the natural world during this period.
