EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning watercolour and bodycolour drawing by Kenneth Denton Shoesmith captures the magnificent sight of the Liverpool waterfront in the late 19th century, with two of the most iconic ocean liners of the era, The Conway and the Mauretania, anchored in the Mersey River. The Conway, a steam-powered paddle wheeler, was a popular passenger and cargo vessel that operated on the Liverpool-Manchester route. The Mauretania, on the other hand, was a state-of-the-art ocean liner, known for her record-breaking speed and luxurious amenities. The intricate detail in Shoesmith's artwork brings the scene to life, from the intricately rendered rigging of the ships to the bustling activity on the dockside. The Conway's distinctive red funnel and paddle wheels are clearly visible, while the Mauretania's elegant white hull and tall smokestacks dominate the background. The drawing also captures the hustle and bustle of the waterfront, with people and carts moving to and fro, and the cranes and other machinery of the dockyard in the distance. Shoesmith's use of light and shadow adds depth and texture to the drawing, with the sun casting long shadows over the water and the ships. The muted colours of the drawing, from the grey-blue of the water to the brown and red of the ships and the dockside, create a sense of authenticity and realism. Overall, this beautiful watercolour drawing offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time when the Liverpool waterfront was a hub of maritime activity and innovation.
